Three Brothers on a Mission
Walking, Water, Writing and living off of the Rays of the Sun

Williams Brothers Appalachian Trail Expedition
Film Treatment
Our view is to set the precedent for a series
of expeditions with the Three Brothers who drop their 9-5s and go on an
expedition every year. This will be the first one, The Appalachian Trail. 2176
Miles of mountain terrain stretching almost the entire east coast of the United
States. The Appalachian Trail is a protected corridor of natural terrain and
only 9000 people have completed the entire trail since it was founded in 1935.
We plan to do the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide, and then
Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Denali and eventually Everest. After each expedition we
will get tattoos of the accomplishment, etc... We are interested in
the commercial aspects of this as well. We’ve included some of the advertising
possibilities in the treatment.
We are currently seeking sponsorships for
these expeditions filmed in HD which will be televised after completion and
posted on the internet as dailies: We have gained some interest and have
submitted treatments to several major networks.
All dailies will be on YouTube, MySpace Video and IFilm. Blogs and Diaries will
be posted weekly. If your company is a brand with excellent products, we think
that the nature of our expedition and the exposure to a worldwide audience would
be a great opportunity for you to further expose your product to millions of
people in practical application.
Story:
The youngest brother of
three proposes that they all hike the entire 2176 miles of the Appalachian
Trail. With 15 years between them and differing ideals and professional
backgrounds;
The oldest, a 10 year US
Marine aviation weapons technician turned professional Jazz Musician and entertainer
The Middle Brother, an
environmentalist, water conservationist, electrical engineer and Solar Power
innovator
The youngest brother: a
Competitive Swimmer and College student majoring in
geography, with an
emphasis in environmental planning.
They drop everything for
four months to embark on a grueling journey that only 9000 people have completed
since the trail was established in 1935. This documentary of the hiking of “The
Trail” on its 72nd anniversary will also include the logistics of setting up the
documentary and will provide enormous opportunities for practical application
style product placement advertising for potential sponsors. We will be filming
in HD so there will be unique HD film content of the most famous North American
trek before it deteriorates from too many through hikers and local zoning
threats. Douglas is a water specialist and Solar Engineer. We will be
implementing solar gadgets and water purification/quality issues throughout the
trip as well as the interaction between three amazingly diverse brothers.
Brothers:

David Williams,
36 is a former Marine Staff Sergeant Aviation Weapons Technician who left for
the Marines when Michael was 3 and Douglas was 14. He is now a Jazz singer and entertainer (AKA
David Patrone) who lives on the West Coast
and Operates Midnight Productions LLC. He
has experience in climbing, hiking and survival training, He attempted to climb
Kilimanjaro in 2000 but got altitude sickness and had to go down. He has
experience hiking in many countries while in the Marines, many Southern
California excursions over the years and is also a Professional Ski Instructor (PSIA)
with lots of experience in the wilderness. David has been on the
Appalachian Trail while a Boy Scout.

Douglas Williams, 32 is an accomplished Solar electrical engineer who has done a lot of
traveling installing solar-powered water pumping stations in remote areas and
helping to deal with water issues esp. accessibility and water quality around
the United States and designed his systems for installation in other countries.
He is knowledgeable in the outdoors and has many outdoor hobbies like kayaking
and mountain climbing. He lives near Philadelphia and
works for WorldWater and Power Technologies. He is involved in many
outdoor activities and also has experience in orienteering and hiking. He
is an Eagle Scout.

Michael Williams, 21 a gifted athlete who has been swimming competitively since he was
7. He is attending Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania (which is near
the Appalachian trail) Michael has no experience hiking long distances and the
training leading up to this will be profiled. He is in the best physical
condition of the three brothers and will be doing a lot of training before the
trail which we hope to document as well.
Synopsis:
This story will be a story
of three brothers discovering each other under adverse situations. It will be
completely unscripted and the bonding and trials will be documented and shown.
The vast difference in personal Background of the three will be apparent and the
physical difficulty of the trail will be expressed but the focus will be on the
interaction of the brothers. We plan to film in high definition so that we can
get a variety of high definition shots of the condition of the trail as well as
a large collection of panoramic vistas with the intention of cataloging the
beauty of the Appalachian Trail. Many networks are starving for HD content and
we think this will make the project easier to sell and more valuable.
Miscellaneous notes:
All three brothers will have
birthdays during this trip
All three brothers play
instruments and will perform (campfires etc.)
Nature trivia and
interesting stories Appalachian Trail History will be a part of the dialogue and interaction between the
brothers
Logistics filming:
There will be a lot of
things that need to be secured in David’s company and the company that Douglas
works for so we will show some of the sacrifice and stress of missing gigs or
lucrative assignments involved in dropping four months of a career. There will
be training hikes. We expect to gain some sponsorship from clothing, equipment
and other outfitters (REI, JANSPORT, Clif Bars, Sierra Trading Post, Timberland,
LEKI, Vasque, North Face, etc.) WorldWater will be supplying the water
purification equipment and we’ll have three cameramen rotating to follow them on
the trail
Green Message:
1. Solar Energy
A 10 Watt Solar Module and a
small battery charger / battery will be taken on the trip in order to facilitate
the use of four pieces of electronics. The first is a water purification system
for us to use that has a fine screen filter, charcoal for non-biological
contaminants, and then utilizes UV Light (which needs electricity) for removing
biological contamination. The second is for smart cell-phone charging (for
uploading pictures on the trip). The third is a GPS beacon for tracking our
progress on the trip. The fourth is a rechargeable flashlight.
2. Water
purification versus water treatment.
It is more often the case that
chlorine or iodine treatment additives are used by through-hikers. However,
these chemicals go back into the environment as well not to mention the chlorine
causing digestion issues. By having the system of charcoal and UV Light, no
chemicals are put back into the environment just to clean the water.
3. GPS Mapping.
We will be GPS mapping the entire route of the Appalachian trail to
submit as the official map for Google Earth and other Trail Documentation
outlets so that other through hikers or researchers can have an accurate GPS
route for the Appalachian Trail. We will be keeping our position online in real
time while we are hiking
Scenes:
Pre Hike Scenes:
Focus on each brother doing
his businesses or school in some of the scenes,
David Answering phone calls
tying to get sponsors etc,
Doug trying to get his
assistant up to speed so he doesn’t have to be distracted on the trip
Michael finishing up school,
training for the hikes
David and Doug and Michael
training for hikes and talking on the Cell phones while hiking separated by the
entire country but hiking at the same time
On the Trail:
Three brothers hiking a
little bit
Lots of HD content for
nature channels, history channel, discovery, OLN etc..
Discourse, dialogue and
Conflict/camaraderie during stops in the trail
The rigors and victories
highlighted
Emphasis on the change in
the relationship between the brothers over time and the effect of the “slowing
down” trail lifestyle absence of modern stimuli
Final Scenes:
Coming in to Katahdin for
the final stretch
Post Production and ramping
back into society
Possible issues adjusting to
hectic life again etc.
Possible Commercial advertising opportunities:
Verizon Wireless the
brothers talking to each other while hiking across the country. We run
into the field test guy. Each brother is in a different state but hiking
or not hiking, at his desk, eating and acting like he's hiking for the other guy
on the phone. Doug has trekking poles next to his desk so he can make
noises while Dave calls form El Cajon Mountain
Solar Power applications
Water Purification issues vs
water treatment
Clothing companies where the
three brothers wear them out by fighting not by hiking
The brothers are the “field
research team” for instance: the Columbia Gert Boyle commercials instead of
trying them on her son,, she send us out on the Appalachian trail and we come
back with ripped (or unripped) stuff but it’s not from hiking, it’s from getting into fights
and rough-housing
